I
went to St. John's College to read the classics
of Western philosophy, science, math and
literature. St. John's is based on reading
and discussion. Testing is minimal, and
while grades are noted, they're not released
without a request from the student. I requested
mine a week before graduating.
For
four years, I enjoyed the best of everything:
reading, talking about ideas, waltzing,
partying, and playing whatever sport was
'in season'. We were all assigned to teams
when we registered. It wasn't until much
later that I realized this isn't the norm
at college.
In
1985, another Senior and I organized, raised
money for, and presided over "Reality",
the final party. My job was coming up with
the ideas and corralling my dad into designing
posters for our events. My partner took
care of the important details. These postcards
were my own doing, and show how much fun
we had at St. John's with the great ideas
of the Western world.
